Man in west Omaha standoff dies of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, police say

Police scanner traffic indicated the man had been traveling at speeds of more than 100 mph through Omaha before entering the home.

Omaha Police Department officers gathered in large numbers near 145th Avenue and Shirley Street around 7:30 p.m., repeatedly calling out a name and asking the man to leave the home.

Police Sgt. Devin Washington said officers who had spotted the man around 7 p.m. knew he had an outstanding felony warrant.

The man began driving erratically after police noticed him, he said, but officers did not attempt a traffic stop. A police helicopter followed him.

Washington said the man forced his way into a home where a woman was inside alone. She told police he pointed a firearm at her and told her to leave.

Washington said police were confident no one else was in the home with the man after the woman left.

A SWAT team assembled outside the residence, and crisis negotiators communicated with the man by text message for nearly three hours, authorities said.

Law enforcement set up caution tape on either side of Shirley Street and, at one point, barricaded the east side of the street with two cruisers.

Multiple pops were heard around 11 p.m. During another briefing at 11:35 p.m., police said the man had been found dead inside the home. They said his gunshot wounds were self-inflicted.

Police did not immediately release the man's name, saying they were trying to notify his family. His death is being treated as an in-custody death under state law and will be investigated by outside police agencies and a grand jury.

No officers were injured in the standoff, and none of them fired at the man, authorities said. Police said no threat remained.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office helped during the incident and provided the use of its Rook tactical vehicle.
