Letter: Newell has vision to address turnover

In the last five years, the amount that Lancaster County taxpayers paid for indigent legal fees jumped from $7.1 million to $11.2 million. That $4 million increase occurred in large part due to losing attorneys and subsequent difficulty filling those positions. Turnover costs the county thousands of dollars each time an attorney is lost. Beyond the recruiting and training costs of new staff, the county must pay private attorneys to handle the overflow. Private attorneys cost the county more per case, meaning that as the Public Defender’s Office loses attorneys, taxpayers pay more to accomplish the same amount of work.
