Fire in vacant North Omaha house spreads to next-door neighbor's residence

The fire at 2575 Crown Point Ave., just south of Miller Park, was reported about 6:20 p.m., according to a statement from the Omaha Fire Department on Tuesday. A second alarm was issued when Douglas County 911 dispatchers were advised by callers that the fire had spread to 2573 Crown Point Ave.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from a vacant single-family dwelling which had communicated to an occupied residence next door.

"A working fire was declared, and firefighters initiated an attack and brought the fire under control in both dwellings," the statement said. "Two parties were displaced as a result of the fire. No firefighters or occupants were injured."

Investigators were on the scene talking to neighbors while trying to determine the cause of the fire. Crews were shuttled in and out due to the heat. At 8 p.m., new crews arrived to give the original responders a rest. 

OPPD and MUD personnel disconnected utilities to the occupied home. The Red Cross arrived to help the occupants find alternate housing until repairs to their house can be made.
