Pastor Bill Forbes leads New Life Lutheran Church in Paxton, a western Nebraska village home to roughly 500 people. In more than two dozen now-deleted sermons reviewed by Flatwater, Forbes frequently expressed conservative views, demonized Muslims and took jabs at Democratic politicians, once referring to former President Joe Biden as “Dementia Joe.”
The New York-based progressive political group Common Defense Action Fund has bombarded Nebraska Democratic Party voters with mailers attacking Bill Forbes in recent days. The mailers seize on Forbes’ support for Donald Trump and opposition to abortion, calling him “a Pete Ricketts puppet.” Forbes denied that Ricketts or anyone else asked him to run for Senate and insisted his candidacy is in good faith.
In a sermon, Pastor Bill Forbes recounted attending a January training in Kearney for conservative political candidates and organizers. Forbes said he approached one of the speakers, Steven Panchenko, to tell him that “Islamists” are “producing babies faster than we are” and “will eventually overtake us.” Forbes told his parishioners that he was not satisfied with Panchenko’s response. “He didn't have an answer,” Forbes said.
