PAXTON, Neb. — On a Sunday morning, Bill Forbes stood behind his pulpit and read from the Book of John.

Pastor Bill Forbes leads New Life Lutheran Church in Paxton, a western Nebraska village home to roughly 500 people. In more than two dozen now-deleted sermons reviewed by Flatwater, Forbes frequently expressed conservative views, demonized Muslims and took jabs at Democratic politicians, once referring to former President Joe Biden as “Dementia Joe.”

Forbes said he approached one of the speakers, Steven Panchenko, to tell him that “Islamists” are “producing babies faster than we are” and “will eventually overtake us.”
