Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department participated in the national “Speeding Catches Up With You” High Visibility Mobilization from July 27 through August 9, which was made possible through grant funding provided by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety.
The enforcement effort focused on reducing speeding and promoting safer driving habits through high-visibility traffic enforcement. During the campaign, nine officers worked selective overtime patrols targeting seat belt violations and other traffic safety concerns throughout the community.
In total, officers conducted 797 traffic stops and issued 287 citations while providing 535 warnings for various traffic violations. Officers also made 167 arrests related to a variety of offenses encountered during enforcement activities. As part of the campaign's speeding enforcement focus, officers also arrested 19 impaired drivers, including 16 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and three arrests for driving under the influence of drugs. There were also seven people arrested for MIP Alcohol.
The “Speed Catches Up With You” campaign is a nationwide initiative designed to reduce speeding and help reduce serious injuries and fatalities resulting from traffic crashes.
