I hope all Nebraska fans had an opportunity to read and savor Amie Just’s article “New history begins with Nebraska’s breakthrough” in the March 20, Lincoln Journal Star. From the very first phrase, Amie’s prose took readers through a journey that was far more than a description of an athletic event. “What does a historic moment look like? It’s unbridled joy manifesting in infectious smiles. It’s unconditional love shown through lengthy hugs, high-fives and chest bumps. It’s pride so overwhelming that tears begin to form.” To all of us who saw that game or celebrated in its retelling, those words wrapped us in the moment and will hold us there always. Few articles on any subject – sports, war, love, life — capture a moment just right. Everything about this one did: the “magical memories” bestowed on all who watched, the noise of the raucous crowd, the surpassing sense of joy and relief when the curse — “tormented by decades of demons” – was not just lifted but blown away.
