I wish to focus on the last sentence of David Deaver’s letter to the editor of July 25 (“Vote for who you want”).
On the surface, Deaver’s advice appears harmless. Most likely it was intended to be helpful. But if one contemplates this advice, in my opinion, it is superficial at best. And at worst, this advice contributes to the discord and dissension our communities and nation are experiencing. This advice implies that my wants are more significant than the needs of my community or my nation.
Regretfully, my sinful human nature reminds me daily to satisfy my wants. Instead I need to reconsider my community’s, my nation’s needs!
I commend Mr. Deaver’s advice to vote, But I would interject we vote not “for who we want.” Instead we should vote for who is best qualified by record, experience or platform for our state and nation. Please read Paul Higgins’ July 25 letter headlined “Mid-term vetting.”
