Meteor showers are one of the easiest and most magical ways to experience the night sky, but catching a great display takes a little planning. Events like the Lyrids shower, which typically peaks in late April, happen when Earth passes through trails of debris left behind by comets, creating bright streaks of light in the sky. According to EarthSky, timing is key. While meteor showers last for several days, the “peak time” offers the best chance to spot the highest number of meteors. Even so, conditions can vary, so it’s worth watching the sky in the days before and after as well. Light pollution can dramatically reduce visibility, so it’s best to head somewhere dark with a wide, open view, like a field or countryside setting. Moonlight can interfere too, so try positioning yourself away from its glare or using natural cover like trees or buildings for shade. Once you’re settled, allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and be patient, meteors often appear in bursts. As EarthSky puts it, “You might see a lot or you might not see many, but if you stay in the house, you won’t see any.”
