COZAD — Cozad Community Schools will be on the search for a new superintendent after Joel Applegate’s immediate resignation was approved by the Cozad school board on July 15.
Applegate resigned from his position as superintendent after the Cozad school board proposed to cancel his employment during a special board meeting on July 8.
Applegate had originally called for a personal hearing regarding this and the school board sought legal counsel to administer the hearing.
The school board voted unanimously to accept his immediate resignation. The board had entered closed session at the start of the meeting to receive legal advice from the school district’s attorney relating to the resignation.
Minutes from the July 15 meeting indicate in exchange for Applegate’s resignation, any claims made against him by the board would be dropped.
Applegate had been Cozad’s superintendent since 2013
Ron Wymore of Kearney had been approved as the interim superintendent on a 60 day contract. During the July 15 meeting the board approved Wymore as the district representative for federal and state programs, a position which had originally been assigned to Applegate during the May 13 board meeting.
Wymore presented the superintendent’s report and said he had spoken with the district office staff, custodial staff and was planning to meeting with the administrative team on Tuesday.
