McLaren driver Lando Norris has captured his first race win of the season following a comfortable victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris, who started the race on pole, finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in second and Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli in third. “My pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had. The car was beautiful to drive, and I had confidence," said Norris. Despite a good start to the race, Norris would lose the lead after going wide at Turn 2 to allow McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to move into first. Piastri continued to lead through the first pit stops; however, Norris began to push hard during his second stint and wanted to make another stop in order to challenge Piastri. McLaren opted against bringing Norris in, instead calling Piastri in first in an effort to cover Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who also just stopped. Norris stayed out for another six laps before changing tires, while Piastri lost considerable time after a collision with Williams driver Carlos Sainz. While Norris cruised to victory, Piastri was angered by proceedings, which he insists were due to the incident with Sainz, rather than team strategy. Norris now lies 91 points behind championship frontrunner Antonelli, who stretched his lead over Hamilton to 50 points.
