US President Donald Trump has announced that his border czar, Tom Homan, will be deployed to Minneapolis after federal agents fatally shot two US citizens in the city. The recent killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good by federal agents in the city has sparked bipartisan criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Homan’s deployment to Minnesota comes amid nationwide protests over the administration’s account of Pretti’s shooting, which conflicts with videos and eyewitness accounts. Homan began his career in local law enforcement in New York, later joining the US Border Patrol and serving as a special agent with the US Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1984. In 2013, during the Obama administration, he led ICE’s deportation branch, and in 2015, he received a Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service from Barack Obama. Homan was acting head of ICE from January 2017 to June 2018 and played a part in implementing the initial family separation policy under Trump. Upon his appointment as border czar, Homan was seen as a leader aligned with Trump’s views and experienced in immigration policy. He portrays illegal immigration as a clear-cut issue and supports Trump’s policy of targeting all undocumented immigrants, not just those with criminal records. In a 2018 interview with The Associated Press, Homan warned, “If you’re in the country illegally, you should be concerned.” “That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Just like if I go speeding down the highway, are you worried about getting a ticket? If you lie on your taxes, are you worried about an audit?” he said in the interview. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump described Homan, who will report directly to the president, as “tough but fair.”
The Trump administration is right that enforcing immigration laws gets criminal illegal immigrants out of communities. It is exceedingly unwise for jurisdictions to release undocumented immigrants from their jails after Immigration and Customs Enforcement asks for those individuals to be held.
