The occasional Omaha World-Herald series "The State of Beef" takes a look at the challenges facing Nebraska’s beef industry, worth more than $10 billion a year.
The State of Beef: Incentives urged to help beef industry find ways to cut emissions
UNL is among a number of universities around the world that have been studying methane from cattle and what can be done to make the industry more sustainable.
California is in the midst of a new gold rush, but the lucrative commodity at the center of it isn’t dug from the ground. It's the methane dairy cattle emit into the air.
In an effort to curb global climate change, the state set targets for reducing methane emissions and established financial incentives for dairy farmers to capture the greenhouse gas. The result is a system through which methane from manure is being turned into a renewable fuel.

The State of Beef: Much-maligned cattle now have chance to be part of climate solution
ITHACA — In what’s been dubbed the “methane barn” at a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agricultural research center near here, sensitive electronic equipment monitors and logs the amount of gas belched out by a herd of yearling steers.
Yes, Andrea Watson and her fellow UNL scientists are studying cow burps. She has already heard all the jokes.

The State of Beef: Cattle producers, Nebraska politicians seek solutions to low profits
NORTH PLATTE — Trey Wasserburger figures he’s got half a decade invested in his cattle before he sells them to a meatpacker.
It starts with getting his Angus cows bred, then helping pull their calves, and weaning the young steers and heifers. Ultimately, they’re fattened with corn and other rations to a market weight of about 1,400 pounds, then sold and processed.
In a tiny storefront on Ashland’s main street, Justin Raikes and his wife, Lindsey, sell high-quality steaks and ground beef produced by hormone-free, American Wagyu cattle raised on the Raikes farm.
Lindsey Raikes tapes up a box for an order to be shipped from Raikes Beef Co. Marketers like the Raikeses must deal with labeling requirements and learn details such as which shipping containers work best in keeping product fresh.
From launching their own packinghouses to marketing steaks directly to consumers, cattle producers are trying different way to make money amid tough times. Justin and Lindsey Raikes of Raikes Beef Co. in Ashland, Nebraska, are among those who sell their product directly to consumers.

The meat produced by American Wagyu cattle is more marbled and tender than most, and it sells at prices slightly higher than that of supermarket chains. “This isn’t your everyday beef,” Justin Raikes said. “We aren’t the grocery store.”

The State of Beef: Producers ask Congress to increase competition among packers
Take a look at the major players in the beef industry and how the beef on your table got from pasture to plate.
In a polarized U.S. Senate, Democrats Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker seldom agree with Republicans Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley.
But all seemed to be on the same page during a recent hearing in Washington probing whether a lack of competition in the meatpacking industry has led to unfair prices for the nation’s cattle producers and excessive prices for beef consumers.

Supply and demand or meatpacker consolidation — who is right in beef over beef?
On a recent “Feeder Flash,” a daily video on cattle markets produced for a Nebraska auction house, commentator Corbitt Wall noted that the major meatpackers were bidding on very few cattle across Kansas that week.
The packers, he said, were refusing to pay the going rate of $130 per hundredweight.
Federal prosecutors say sanitation supervisors in a Grand Island plant knew that minors were hired to work dangerous jobs, often overnight, cleaning hazardous equipment in hot steam and standing in meat-filled water on the killing room floor.
