Around 27,500 cranes were counted on the Crane Trust's first aerial survey on Feb. 14. The report also listed 23,200 dark geese, 73 trumpeter swans and seven bald eagles.
This year, as the cranes return to central Nebraska, area business and tourism leaders believe tourists — and their dollars — will return as well. For three straight years, natural disasters and then a pandemic kept them away.
The three-day event will be held in Nebraska for the first time since 2010, starting Friday at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Last Friday, the Crane Trust estimated there were 6,400 cranes on the Platte River. That number will grow to more than 600,000 at the peak of the spring migration.
On Monday, Senior U.S. District Judge John Gerrard sentenced Craig Hoffman to two years in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Hoffman also was ordered to pay $325,197.90 restitution.
Investigators haven't determined the person's gender, age and identity, Capt. Eric Sellers said. "We are also working to determine the cause of death, but it does appear to be suspicious."
Kearney Cinema 8 owner, Bobby Wilson, is confident the theater will reopen in three or four weeks. A destructive storm caused the theater to close for repairs in 2021.
The arrival of the whooping cranes is a big moment for researchers and fans from around the world who come to Nebraska for their annual migration.
Plans include additions on both ends of the visitor center, a larger parking lot, a wetlands exploration deck along the Platte River and a new ADA-accessible path to a blind.

Wildlife habitat conservation is only one activity in the vast Platte River Basin. The water also allows for irrigation, hydropower production, municipal water supplies, economic development and recreation.
