US President Donald is set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature on US banknotes, the Treasury Department has announced. Trump’s signature will appear next to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's, in a move that the department said would mark America’s 250th anniversary. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name,” Bessent said. The move goes against federal law, which states that no living president may appear on US currency, and has drawn criticism from his Democratic opponents. It is the latest effort by the administration to link Trump’s name with various government programs and public buildings. The first $100 bills featuring the signatures of both Trump and Bessent will be printed in June, with additional bills to follow. Since 1861, US paper currency has included the signatures of the treasurer and the treasury secretary or the register of the treasurer. Trump’s name is also planned to appear on a commemorative gold coin featuring his image, to be issued to mark the country’s anniversary. This comes as recent polls show Trump’s approval rating hitting an all-time low of 36% amid inflation and rising living costs, partly due to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
