Seven in 10 US adults believe the country is on the “wrong track” under President Donald Trump, according to a new NBC News Decision Desk poll. Just weeks ahead of the midterm elections, the poll found that Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 34% among US adults, while his disapproval rating stood at 66%. The poll also found that 51% of US voters “strongly disapprove” of Trump’s performance as president, the highest level recorded during his second term. Among registered voters, 55% said they would prefer Democrats to control Congress, signalling a potential challenge for Republicans in the upcoming elections. Among US adults, 58% said Trump’s policies were hurting the country, while 28% said they were helping and 14% said they were making no difference. Economic concerns were central to voters’ views, with just 27% of US adults approving of Trump’s handling of the cost of living. The poll comes as rising inflation continues to weigh on Americans, with 44% of respondents admitting that their financial situation is worse now than it was a year earlier. Approval ratings were similarly low for Trump’s handling of other issues, including the war with Iran, at 29%, and artificial intelligence (AI), at 33%.
Trump launched the idea during the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas, where he pledged to pay every American adult $5,000 if Republicans kept control of both houses of Congress.
