Mayo Clinic researchers have used artificial intelligence to design an experimental drug that targets a region of the GIPC1 protein long considered impossible to drug, opening a new path against pancreatic cancer. The AI-designed compound, called GIPCi, blocks the protein's PDZ domain, which helps tumors grow and resist treatment. In laboratory studies, the drug slowed tumor growth, extended survival, and boosted the effectiveness of the chemotherapy drug gemcitabine, while showing early signs of reshaping the environment around tumors. Published in Cell Reports, the findings mark one of the first examples of AI directly generating a viable small-molecule cancer drug candidate against a previously 'undruggable' target. The work remains preclinical, and researchers say further safety studies are needed before human trials can begin, but they call it a strong foundation for the next phase of research.
