GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and similar treatments have been widely called “wonder drugs” for weight loss and blood sugar control. However, new research is shedding light on why results can vary so much from person to person. Scientists now estimate that about one in 10 people don’t see notable changes when using GLP-1 drugs. According to researchers, this isn’t always due to dosage or lifestyle habits. A study published in Genome Medicine points to genetic differences that may play a key role in how the body responds. One gene variant appears to reduce how effectively the body responds to GLP-1 hormones. In one study, participants with this variant showed an increase in GLP-1 levels after consuming sugar, but their bodies were about 18% less sensitive to the hormone overall. As professor Anna Louise Gloyn explains, there are “defects” in how the hormone signal is processed in some individuals. For now, doctors say patients who don’t respond to GLP-1s may need to explore other medications or focus on lifestyle changes alongside treatment.
