The S-E-M Mustang volleyball team picked up their first wins of the season, defeating Axtell and Overton in a triangular in Sumner.
S-E-M won 25-20 and 25-23 over Axtell in the first of three games. In the last game, S-E-M won 24-26, 25-20 and 25-22 over Overton.
Overton lost 25-16 and 26-24 to Axtell in the second game.
S-E-M VS. AXTELL
The evening started with back-to-back errors for both teams, but a Kyler Jones kill followed by her ace put S-E-M up 5-4.
Axtell committed two hitting errors to give S-E-M a 9-6 lead.
Down the stretch, Axtell took the lead 12-10 after three straight S-E-M attack errors.
Late in the first set, S-E-M took a 20-17 lead after Jones’ third ace.
S-E-M reached set point off an Axtell attack error and won the set 25-20 off an ace by Myka Cranwell.
Jones kicked off the second set with a kill. The Mustangs put Axtell behind 6-3 after an attack error.
The Mustangs dropped their lead after three straight errors gave Axtell a tie at 9.
The teams traded points down the back stretch before S-E-M used a timeout after trailing 17-15.
A kill by Lily Hrasky pulled S-E-M behind 21-10, and a few plays later, a kill by Jones gave S-E-M the lead back 22-21.
An Axtell serve error gave S-E-M match point, and Jones capped the win with an ace.
Jones had six kills, four aces and one solo block in the Mustangs’ win.
OVERTON VS. AXTELL
Overton fell behind 3-0 to start the first set, giving up back-to-back points on attack errors.
Axtell took a 9-1 lead after an Overton error and a Wildcat kill.
Jillian Clark put down a kill for Overton, pulling the Eagles behind 14-9.
From there Axtell took off on a 7-2 run to lead 21-11.
Overton turned a 5-1 run, pulling behind 22-16 off a kill by Piper McCarter.
An Overton attack error gave Axtell set point, and the Wildcats ended on an ace to win 25-16.
Axtell jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set off an Overton error.
The lady Eagles battled back, pulling behind 7-6 after back-to-back Axtell attack errors.
Down the stretch, Axtell took a 13-7 lead after a Wildcat block.
Overton pulled within four after an Eagle block at 14-10.
Axtell followed three Overton errors with a kill and a block to jump out to a 19-10 lead.
Kyla Elfgren had two aces in Overton’s 8-0 run. The Eagles pulled behind 19-18 after an Eagle block.
McCarter put down a kill to keep Overton alive at 23-22. On the next play, Mickailee Reil put down a kill, tying the set 23-23.
An Overton block tied the set at 24, but Axtell reached match point 25-24 off an Overton attack error.
Axtell won the match with a kill.
S-E-M VS. OVERTON
The rivalry matchup ended with a Mustang win, but Overton didn’t give up easily.
Overton led-8-4 after back-to-back S-E-M errors.
Down the stretch, Jones pulled the Mustangs behind 11-9 with a kill.
Four straight Overton attack errors put S-E-M up 16-13.
Three aces by Jones extended the Mustang lead 21-14. Overton started clawing their way back.
Overton pulled behind 24-23 after using a 4-1 run, forcing a Mustang timeout.
The Eagles used a block for a tie at 24 before earning set point off a kill by Paecyn Hubbard.
Overton won the set 26-24 off an S-E-M error.
S-E-M took a 2-0 lead in the second set off back-to-back kills.
A Clark kill pulled Overton behind 4-3. S-E-M followed with a 5-2 run to lead 9-5.
The Mustangs went up 16-10 off back-to-back kills by Jones.
Late in the second set, Avery Harder’s kill gave S-E-M a 23-15 lead.
S-E-M used a timeout after Overton used a 3-0 run, pulling behind 23-18.
A kill by Jones gave S-E-M set point, but a Mustang serve error kept Overton alive for one more point.
An Overton error gave S-E-M the set win 25-20.
The beginning of the third set started out evenly before S-E-M took a 6-3 lead off an Overton error.
A kill by Elfgren pulled Overton behind 11-9. The set tied at 12 after an error by S-E-M.
Back-to-back S-E-M errors gave Overton the lead 16-14.
Jones sent over back-to-back aces, putting S-E-M in the lead 18-16.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 21-18 lead off a tip kill by Hrasky.
An Overton attack error gave S-E-M match point at 24-19, but Overton’s fight wasn’t over.
Elfgren sent over an ace, closing the gap 24-21. S-E-M called a timeout.
S-E-M had an error, pulling Overton behind 24-22. Jones capped the three-set win with a kill.
Jones had 11 kills, five aces and one set in the Mustangs’ win. Harder had six kills and one ace.
