Some lucky guests joined in the celebration for one of the latest babies born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium — a female elephant.
Jayei, the matriarch of the African elephant herd at about 30 years old, gave birth at 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
The new calf with her mom at Omaha’s zoo. She was born Sunday morning.
The new calf born at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium has been able to go outside because of the time of the year and because she has an experienced mother.
The new baby is cause for celebration, said Dr. Luis Padilla, president and CEO of the zoo. “We are fortunate to have a multigenerational, socially complex African elephant herd with four calves, which is unique to the United States,” he said.
