Gothenburg Melon juniors sweep Kimball in home doubleheader
The Gothenburg Melon juniors defeated Kimball 8-2 and 15-2 in a doubleheader Saturday in Gothenburg.
Gothenburg improved to 8-1 on the season ahead of their Monday game against Cambridge.
GAME 1
Andrew Salomon started on the mound for the Melons in the first game.
After giving up two walks, Gothenburg had a double play for two outs.
Salomon grabbed the third out on a strikeout to end the top of the first inning.
Gothenburg got three runners on quickly after Callen Johnson, Jaxon Earll and Evan Geiser drew walks.
Kimball struck out William McVay for their first out.
Salomon singled on a ground ball to left field that put Johnson across home.
Earll scored on Kale Dea's ground ball single.
A double based hit for Brighma Ricley put in two Melon runs.
The Melons got the bases loaded after Hayden Pesek drew a walk but they were left on base after Kimball got back-to-back outs.
Gothenburg led 4-0 after the first inning closed out.
Salomon gave up three walks but Gothenburg got an out at second base then picked up the second out on a strikeout.
Kimball put in two runs before Gothenburg got the third out at third base.
Earll started the bottom of the second with a single to left field before Geiser grounded out.
McVay hit into center field for a single that put Earll across home.
A single for Salomon gave the Melons two runners on.
Dea grounded out but the hit turned into an RBI as McVay scored, putting the Melons up 6-2.
Gothenburg went up 7-2 after Ricley singled on a flyball that put Blake Brown across home.
Kimball got the third out to close out the second inning as Pesek hit a pop fly in foul territory.
Salomon gave up two walks but picked up a strikeout in the top of the third to keep Kimball from scoring.
Johnson singled into center field and Earll followed with a walk.
Geiser swung into left field that put Johnson into score a run. The Melons led 8-2.
McVay and Salomon grounded into fielder's choice to give Kimball the final two outs.
Gothenburg changed pitchers to Dea to start the top of the fourth.
Dea pitched three straight strikeouts in Gothenburg's three up and three down to end the game with an 8-2 victory.
GAME 2
Dea started on the mound for the Melons in the second game.
Geiser, catcher, caught the first out on a pop fly. Dea threw the second out to McVay at first.
The top of the first ended after Dea pitched a strikeout.
As the lead-off batter, Johnson singled on a ground ball. Johnson took second base on the Kimball error.
Earll followed with a ground ball single down third base. Johnson advanced to third.
Geiser flew out to left field but Johnson scored after tagging up at third base.
McVay hit into left field, putting Earll across home.
Salomon reached on an error after his ground ball. The hit advanced McVay to third and Salomon to second.
Gothenburg went up 3-0 after McVay scored on Ricley's hit into center field.
Dea followed with a single, putting Salomon into score.
Kimball picked up their second out after Gared Sabin struck out.
Brown hit in an RBI double on a line drive double base hit to left field. Ricley and Drake Swan scored.
Johnson got out advancing to first on a ground ball but his hit put Brown across home. The Melons led 7-0 after the first inning closed out.
The Melons saw four batters in the top of the second but the defense stood to keep Kimball from scoring. Dea gave up a walk.
Swan and Geiser got on base but were left on after Cameron Rookstool grounded out, Salomon had a pop fly and Ricley grounded out.
After giving up a single in the top of the third, Gothenburg picked up three straight outs on Kimball ground outs.
Dea drew a walk as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the third and Sabin followed with a single to left field.
Brown and Johnson grounded out to give Kimball back-to-back outs.
Swan hit a double into left field that put Sabin and Johnson across home. The Melons went up 9-0.
The third inning closed out after Geiser grounded out.
Ricley took the mound to pitch in the top of the fourth.
Kimball kicked off the top of the fourth with a triple base hit.
The Melons got their first out on a grounder but the hit put a run in.
Ricley gave up back-to-back walks.Â
Gothenburg got the second out, catching the runner stealing second base.
The third out came after Ricley got a strikeout.
As the lead-off batter, Rookstool single into left field.
Kimball got their first out after Salomon hit a pop fly in foul territory.
Pesek singled on a fly ball into right field, giving the Melons bases loaded.
A double base hit for Sabin put two runs in for the Melons.
Gothenburg led 12-2 after Pesek scored on a passed ball during Brown's at bat. Brown drew a walk.
Sabin scored the 13th run on a passed ball on the first pitch of Johnson's at bat.
Johnson doubled into center field but no runs scored.
Swan drew a walk that gave the Melons bases loaded.
Kimball changed pitchers after Brown scored on a passed ball. Cannon Holthaus struck out.
Rookstool swung into left field, putting Johnson across home. The Melons led 15-2.
The fourth inning closed out after Salomon grounded out to first base.
Kimball had one final chance to score in the top of the fifth put the Gothenburg defense stood strong.
Ricley pitched a strikeout as the first out before giving up a walk.
Gothenburg got the second out after getting the runner out advancing to second base.
Ricley caught the third out on a pop fly to end the game.
