Gothenburg juniors use late hitting sequence to defeat Lexington 7-6
A late batting sequence for the Gothenburg Melon juniors gave them a 7-6 win over Lexington Friday in Lexington.
After falling behind 6-3 through four innings, the Melons put together three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the match.
The winning run came in the top of the seventh after Gunner Thompson flew out to center field but the hit put Andrew Salomon across home after he tagged up at third.
Lexington had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth but William McVay struck out three batters and allowed a walk for Miguel Rodriguez.
Gothenburg started the evening with a hit from Callen Johnson and Jaxon Earll followed with a walk.
Lexington picked up their first out after Angel Ruiz caught Evan Geiser's fly out to right field.
McVay grounded out to second base to give Lexington their second out. The hit put Johnson into score the Melons' first run.
The top of the first ended after Salomon grounded out.
Gothenburg started the bottom of the first with an out after getting Miguel Rodriguez out on a dropped third strike.
Jared Hernandez and Drexton Edeal drew walks but were left on base after Toran Kjar and Mason Velasquez were out on their hits.
Kjar pitched a strikeout against Thompson.
Brighma Ricley got on for the Melons with a fly ball to right field.
Lexington grabbed their second out after Gared Sabin flew out to Hernandez in left field.
Drake Swan drew a walk but the half-inning closed out after Kjar struck out Johnson.
The Melons went three up and three down after Earll struck out Liam Denker, Kaden Barkmeier and Anthony Martinez.
Earll kicked off the the third inning with a walk and Geiser followed with a single to left field.
McVay was struck out by Kjar to give Lexington their first out.
Gothenburg earned their second run after Salomon doubled on a line drive to right field, putting Blake Brown across home.
Thompson hit a pop fly caught by Martinez for Lexington's second out.
Geiser scored on Ricley's ground ball hit, putting Lexington up 3-0.
Lexington ended the top of the third after getting Salomon out at home plate.
The Melons started the bottom of the third with an out after Ruiz flew out to center field.
Rodriguez earned a walk after being hit by a pitch.
Hernandez was struck out to give Gothenburg two outs but it wasn't quite over for Lexington.
Edeal got the hot streak going for Lexington, hitting a ground ball passed third base to put Rodriguez across home.
A single base hit for Kjar put two runners on for Lexington.
Velasquez singled on a fly to center field that pulled Lexington behind 3-2 after Edeal scored.
The tying run game after Kjar scored on Denker's ground ball hit and an error by Gothenburg.
The bases were loaded for Lexington after Barkmeier drew a walk.
Martinez hit into right field that put two runs across home as Lexington took the lead 5-3.
The third inning closed out after Ruiz flew out to Swan at second base.
Kjar pitched a strikeout against Swan to kick-off the top of the fourth.
Johnson grounded out to Edeal at third base before Earll earned a walk.
Lexington grabbed the third out after Geiser hit a line drive to Barkmeier at second base.
Gothenburg put McVay into pitch to start the bottom of the fourth.
McVay gave up a walk to Rodriguez before striking out Hernandez.
Edeal hit a ground ball but an error by Earll at shortstop put Rodriguez into score. Lexington led 6-3.
Kjar earned a walk but was left on base with Edeal after McVay pitched back-to-back strikeouts.
Lexington went three up and three out in the top of the fifth. Kjar had one strikeout.
The Melons grabbed back-to-back outs after Barkmeier grounded out and Martinez flew out to third baseman Johnson.
Ruiz and Rodriguez drew walks and Hernandez reached first on a dropped third strike.
Lexington was left with bases loaded after McVay struck out Edeal to close out the fifth inning.

Thompson flew out to Rodriguez in center field, putting the winning run across home.
Velasquez struck out Ricley and Sabin to end the half-inning.
Ruiz, Hernandez and Edeal struck out in the bottom of the seventh, leaving Rodriguez on after drawing a walk.
With the win, Gothenburg improved to 6-1 ahead of their Saturday doubleheader against Kimball.
Lexington's record was 5-5 after the loss.
