VOLLEYBALL: Cozad beats Holdrege in 3, falls to Ogallala in 3 Tuesday
OGALLALA — The Cozad Haymakers went 1-1 at the Ogallala triangular Tuesday.
Cozad won 17-25, 25-18 and 27-25 over Holdrege in their first game. The Haymakers lost 18-25, 27-25 and 16-25 to Ogallala in the final game.
Emersyn Propp had 16 kills, three blocks and two aces in their win over Holdrege. She had 13 kills and two blocks in the loss to the Indians.
VS. HOLDREGE
The first set remained fairly even until Holdrege took a 6-3 lead off a Cozad attack error. A Braelyn Malcom kill tied the set at 7-7.
Holdrege took a 15-11 lead off a kill, and stretched the lead to 20-12 on a 5-0 run.
Cozad battled back, pulling within seven at 23-17 off a Propp kill. The Dusters reached set point off their own kill, but Cozad stayed alive after a Propp kill. A Cozad attack error awarded Holdrege the first set win 25-17.
A Propp kill gave Cozad a 2-1 lead in the second set. The Haymakers tied the set at 5-5 after trailing by two. A Malcom kill put Cozad up 7-6.
An ace by Holdrege gave the Dusters a 16-14 lead. Cozad jumped out to a 20-17 lead after a Malcom kill. Holdrege followed with back-to-back errors, giving Cozad a 22-17 lead.
Emalyn Geiger put down a kill out of a Holdrege timeout, and a Holdrege attack error followed to give Cozad set point.
Geiger capped the set win with a kill, forcing a third set.
Back-to-back Malcom kills gave the Haymakers an 8-5 lead in the third set. Holdrege used a 3-0 run off a block, tying the set at 8-8.
A couple of Holdrege errors put the Haymakers up 12-9. Propp had a block followed by an ace, putting Cozad up 14-11.
Holdrege pulled within one at 18-17 after back-to-back blocks. Malcom put down a kill after a Cozad timeout.
The Dusters took the lead 22-21 off a kill. Cozad pulled back ahead 23-22 off a Malcom kill.
Propp had a back row kill to keep Cozad alive at 24 after Holdrege reached match point.
Holdrege gave Cozad match point off their own serve error, and Malcom finished off the set 27-25 with a kill.
VS. OGALLALA
Cozad fell behind 5-0 in the first set, after an Ogallala block. The Indians continued to dominate the set, jumping ahead 14-4 off a Cozad error.
A Propp kill ended the Ogallala run. Down the stretch, a Malcom kill pulled Cozad within nine at 18-9.
Propp had two kills and a block in Cozad’s 6-0 run. The Haymakers pulled within three at 21-18.
Ogallala used a 4-0 run to finish off the set, and an Indian ace won the first set 25-18.
After trailing early in the second set, Cozad took a 10-5 lead off an Ogallala attack error.
A Malcom kill put Cozad up 13-10 and the Haymakers stretched that lead to 18-13 after an Ogallala net violation.
Ogallala pulled within two at 22-20 after an ace. Cozad reached set point after a Malcom kill. Malcom capped the second set with a block, giving Cozad the 27-25 win.
The Haymakers led 3-1 after a Propp kill to begin the third set. Cozad maintained the lead early in the third, until back-to-back Ogallala kills tied the set at 5-5.
The Indians jumped to a 12-8 lead off their own kill, and later lead 17-10. Cozad pulled within five at 17-12 after back-to-back Propp kills.
Ogallala had a kill to reach match point 24-16, and an ace capped the win for the Indians.
