Cozad Reds seniors hold off Kearney Jersey's in 7-6 home win Tuesday
COZAD — The Cozad Reds seniors claimed their second win of the season after holding off Kearney Jersey's 7-6 Tuesday in Cozad.
The Reds fell short Monday to Broken Bow 6-3.
TUESDAY
Chayden Hoffmaster took the mound for Cozad to start the night, striking out one in the first.
Kearney took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
In the bottom half, Mathew Arndt drew a walk as the lead-off batter and Owen Ross followed with a single.
Ashton Osborn grounded out before Hoffmaster was hit by a pitch.
Cozad had the bases loaded as Ethan Atchison stepped to the plate. Atchison struck out to give the Jersey's their second out.
Brayden Barber singled on a fly ball, scoring two to tie the game.
The first inning closed when Braedon Groteluschen flew out to left.
The Reds kept Kearney scoreless in the second with Hoffmaster claiming his second strikeout, but walking one.
Alec Osborn and Ryder Armagost struck out to begin the bottom of the second. Arndt then singled on a line down the first base line and Ross drove to center.
Ashton Osborn loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch.
Kearney had multiple errors after Hoffmaster reached on a dropped third strike.
The errors helped score three for Cozad, putting the Reds up 5-2.
After Atchison was hit by a pitch, Kearney changed pitchers. Barber was out on a foul tip.
Cozad began the top of the third with an out after a Hoffmaster strikeout.
Armagost claimed the second out in center before the Reds gave up a walk.
A ground out ended the top of the third.
Kearney went three up and three down in the bottom of the third. Groteluschen struck out, Alec Osborn grounded out and Armagost grounded out.
The Jersey's got two on right away in the top of the fourth with a hit by pitch and a single. Hoffmaster collected a strikeout before giving up a walk.
Kearney scored one run before Cozad grabbed their second out in the top of the fourth.
Ross then caught a line drive at shortstop for the third out, keeping Cozad up 5-3.
The bottom of the fourth started with a Arndt single and a Ross walk. Cozad led 6-3 after Arndt scored on Hoffmaster's pop out to third base.
The forth closed with Atchison striking out.
Kearney scored one run in the top of the fifth on a Cozad error.
The Reds held onto a two-run lead going into the bottom of the inning.
Kearney went three up and three down. Barber grounded out, Groteluschen struck out and Austin Feik flew out to left.
A single on a ground ball pulled the Jersey's to within one at 6-5. Kearney tied the game after a double scored a second run.
Cozad picked up the third out on a line to Barber at second. Armagost struck out as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the sixth before Arndt singled on a grounder.
Arndt stole second base and was awarded third on a Kearney balk. Ross grounded out, but the hit gave Arndt the winning run.
The sixth inning closed with Ashton Osborn popping out to shortstop.
Cozad went three up and three down to claim the win 7-6.
MONDAY
Ross took the mound in the top of the first for Cozad. He picked up two strikeouts and gave up one hit. Armagost claimed the first out in left.
Arndt started the bottom of the second with a ground ball single before Broken Bow got three straight outs.
A Cozad error gave Broken Bow one runner on. The Reds' defense picked up the next three outs to close the top of the second inning.
Hoffmaster drew a walk as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the second. Atchison flew out to center for the first out before Barber singled on a ground ball.
Hoffmaster attempted to steal home, but was caught for a second out. Groteluschen grounded out to close the second inning.
Ross struck out the first batter of the third and Hoffmaster caught a fly ball in second. Ross gave up back-to-back walks before ending the top of the third with a strikeout.
Broken Bow went three up and three down in the bottom of the third.
Alec Osborn struck out, Armagost flew out to left and Arndt lined out to shortstop.
Cozad had back-to-back errors that put Broken Bow up 1-0 early in the fourth inning.
A bunt loaded the bases for Broken Bow with no outs. An infield pop up to Ashton Osborn secured the first out for Cozad.
Broken Bow scored two runs on an error by Ross covering a bunt.
A steal of home put Broken Bow up 4-0 before a line drive hit scored a second run.
Cozad grabbed back-to-back outs and Ross struck out the third to end the frame.
Ross led off with a single to right and Ashton Osborn was out on a foul pop up.
Hoffmaster hit a line drive single to left before Atchison was hit by a pitch.
Barber flew out to right, giving Broken bow their second out.
Ross scored on a Groteluschen single on a line drive to left, but Alec Osborn lined out to second base to end the inning.
Ross gave up a walk and a hit before collecting a strikeout in the fifth. Cozad kept Broken Bow from scoring after a double play to end the top of the fifth.
Broken Bow went three up and three down to close the fifth. Armagost popped out to second base, Arndt flew out to center and Ross struck out.
Ross struck out the first batter in the top of the sixth before exiting the mound. Arndt took the mound, giving up back-to-back walks. Cozad then grabbed two straight outs.
Broken Bow earned back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the sixth, getting Ashton Osborn out on a pop fly and Hoffmaster with a strikeout.
Atchison drew a walk before Barber walked.
Groteluschen hit a fly to center and reached on an error. The hit plated two runs with Atchison and Barber scoring. Cozad pulled behind 5-3.
Alec Osborn was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Cozad. Osborn was picked off at first, closing the sixth.
Arndt gave up a hit in the top of the seventh before strikeout, but gave up a walk to put two on.
Hoffmaster caught the second out in center, but the Broken Bow runner scored after tagging up.
Broken Bow led 6-3 before Barber caught the third out to end the top of the seventh.
Armagost drew a walk to start the bottom of the seventh. Arndt’s sacrifice bunt advanced Armagost.
Ross struck out for the second out of the inning and Ashton Osborn was hit by a pitch to put two runners on.
The game ended when Osborn was caught trying to steal second.
