Lexington City Council unanimously approves rezoning
Ashley Mohler
The council chambers at Lexington City Hall were filled with lighthearted laughter and friendly banter among council members as they prepared for the Tuesday, June 9, meeting.
The the relaxed atmosphere reflected the agenda, containing only a handful of business items: the final reading of an ordinance concerning Michael Wieneke’s property, an updated Lexington Volunteer Fire Department roster and a contract with the West Central Nebraska Area Agency on Aging.
All items were approved without debate or opposition.
The council held the second and final reading of an ordinance to rezone Wieneke’s property at 110 E. River Road from light industrial to highway commercial.
Secretary Bill Brecks told the council he had received no public complaints regarding the proposed rezoning, and the ordinance was adopted unanimously.
The Lexington Volunteer Fire Department also submitted an updated roster for council approval, which was granted unanimously.
City Manager Joe Pepplitsch described the contract with the West Central Nebraska Area Agency on Aging as a “housekeeping item,” noting it is considered annually and helps support the Meals on Wheels program. The council unanimously approved the contract for 2027.
The council entered executive session to discuss contracts. No action was taken following the session.
Although there were no public comments, council members used roundtable discussion time to thank city staff and crews for their storm cleanup efforts and for their continued work maintaining and improving the city’s cemeteries.
The Lexington City Council meets every other week in the council chambers at Lexington City Hall, 406 E. Seventh St. Agendas for upcoming meetings and minutes from previous meetings are available at cityoflex.com.
