Lexington Minutemen soccer
LEXINGTON — The Lexington boys and girls soccer teams defeated the Crete Cardinals Saturday.
The Minutemen used the second half to win 2-0 in Lexington at Ray Ehlers Stadium.
The Minutemaids came from behind in the second half to win 5-3 at Crete.
Lexington hosts Scottsbluff Tuesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. at the Fieldhouse Complex.
MINUTEMEN
Lexington held the majority of the possessions in the first half Saturday, and overall throughout the game.
The Minutemen started off with the strong wind at their back which led to multiple shots missing their mark.
Lexington came close twice in the first half but both shots hit the goal posts and cleared by the Cardinal defense.
The match remained scoreless at intermission.
A corner kick in the 56th minute set the Minutemen up for their first goal.
Lexington's Adan Lima-Miranda sent the ball in to the left of the goal to find Jose Navarrete for a header that found its way around the Crete keeper for a Minutemen goal.
The teams battled for possession of the ball for roughly 10 minutes before Lexington scored again.
A long pass found Kendrick Marroquin-Ordonez racing for the ball.
Marroquin-Ordonez took a shot at the goal that was cleared by Crete's Anthony Bennett.
The ball bounced off Crete's Christopher Eberhardt and landed right in front of Marroquin-Ordonez.
With the Cardinal keeper on the ground, Marroquin-Ordonez was open for the shot and the goal in the 64th minute.
Crete attempted a long free kick with four minutes left in regulation but the ball skipped around the turf and to the right of the goal.
Lexington was able to hold off the Cardinals in the remaining minutes to improve their record to 8-3.
Minutemen keeper Alexis Alvidrez-Cardiel had three saves in the win.
The Cardinal keeper Henry Jaimes Jr. had five saves.
MINUTEMAIDS
Crete used the opening six minutes to take a 2-0 lead in their ultimate 5-3 loss to the Maids on their home turf.
Cardinal Meleni Linares took a high shot over keeper Caren Mejia from approximately 25 yards out in the third minute.
A Kacey Dunaway goal from 15 yards out on a cross kick put the Cardinals up 2-0 in the sixth minute.
Both teams battled for possession through the strong wind until Lexington finally got on the board.
In the 26th minute, Samantha Caballero scored her first of three goals.
A high shot from 25 yards out sailed over the Cardinal keeper, pulling the Maids behind by one goal.
The Minutemaids were down 2-1 at intermission.
The tying goal came in the 57th minute as Yasmin Barrios connected a pass from Emmersyn Lawless for a goal from the left side of the field.
Lexington led 3-2 after a Caballero goal in the 63rd minute.
Caballero was able to pull the keeper out from about 10 yards and the shot rolled into the goal despite the efforts of a Cardinal defender sliding into the goal in an attempt to clear the ball.
Crete set up for a free kick in the 65th minute.
Linares' goal tied the match at 3 after Mejia moved from the net to save the shot and Linares cleaned up for a goal.
In the 70th minute, Caballero made quick work of the ball off an assist from Lawless.
Caballero bounced the ball over the keeper's head and into the goal to put Lexington up 4-3.
The game winning goal came from Lawless as the game fell under two minutes left in regulation.
The Maids had eight shots on goal with four from Lawless.
Mejia had three saves.
Lexington's win gave putting the Maids on a seven-game win streak and improved their record to 8-2.
