Beveridge leads Gothenburg volleyball to sweep of St. Pat’s
Gothenburg’s Zoe Beveridge had an unofficial 11 kills, and the Swedes notched 12 aces as Gothenburg swept St. Pat’s 25-8, 25-15, 25-22 on Tuesday in North Platte.
“I thought we played clean for the most part,” Gothenburg coach Bryson Mahlberg said. “That third set I think got away from us a little bit serve receive-wise. We made a few more unforced errors than we did the previous two sets. I think that’s good for us.
"I think it’s battling back from adversity. We added a new lineup tonight. Grace Evert has been hurt for the last week and a half, so filtering her back in a little bit. So I thought they did a good job of handling that.”
Grace Evert added seven kills, and Lauren Mroczek had five. Riley Flesch led with six aces, and Ellaray Koch had three.
Ruby Uerling led St. Pat’s with seven kills, while Olivia Phelps had three and Zaleah Cartwright finished with two.
Jade Welch, Miranda Huggenberger and Phelps each had two aces.
Gothenburg used multiple runs in the first set to dominate the frame in a 25-8 win. After serving the ball into the net, the Swedes went on a 7-0 run with kills from Beveridge and Evert and two aces from Koch to go up 14-3.

Later in the frame, Gothenburg went on a 5-0 run to extend the lead from 17-5 to 22-5 with kills from Mroczek, Beveridge and Shayne Kinnan.
Both teams traded the first six points to open the second set, but Gothenburg pulled away with a 6-0 run with three aces from Flesch to go up 9-3. St. Pat’s responded with five straight points behind two kills from Uerling to cut the deficit to one.
A Beveridge kill and ace started a 6-1 run to extend Gothenburg’s lead to 15-9. The Irish pulled within three with three straight points, then Gothenburg scored the next six points to go up 21-12. Gothenburg went on to win the set 25-15.
St. Pat’s and Gothenburg played a closer third set, with the score being tied nine times in the frame. The Irish nabbed a late lead at 20-16 following a 7-0 run with three kills from Uerling and an ace from Huggenberger.
Gothenburg responded by scoring the next seven points behind kills from Beveridge and Evert and two aces from Flesch to go up 23-20. Gothenburg won the set 25-22.
“We talk about how serving can be a benefit and a positive for our team,” Mahlberg said. “And I thought you saw that really come to fruition in the first two sets. Probably needed to be a little cleaner the third set, but I thought we managed well.”
