North Platte Community College adding men’s, women’s wrestling
Andrew Bottrell
The North Platte Community College athletic department is adding men’s and women’s wrestling programs, following approval from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
The addition gives the Knights an opportunity to compete against several familiar NJCAA Division I, Region IX opponents, including Northwest College (Wyo.), Western Wyoming, Otero College (Colo.), Northeastern (Colo.), Trinidad State College (Colo.) and Southeast Community College, which have either men’s, women’s or both wrestling programs, the school said in a press release.
The expansion of athletics comes as the college continues to seek opportunities to retain local students in the service area.
Construction is underway on two new housing units on NPCC’s North Campus. The additional housing will increase the college’s current on-campus capacity by 24 beds, providing more opportunities for students to live on campus while participating in academic, athletic and student life activities.
College athletic programs provide student-athletes with opportunities to develop their skills while competing at the local, regional and national levels. They also contribute to campus involvement, school spirit and help build a strong sense of community.
NPCC will begin its search for the program’s first head coach, with the position paired with an open physical education instructor position in North Platte.
