Cozad softball goes 1-2 at Saturday York Invite
Cozad softball went 1-2 Saturday at the York Invite.
The Haymakers lost 5-2 to the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders, and lost 10-4 to York.
Cozad picked up a thrilling 10-8 win over Fairbury.
Cozad hosts Adams Central Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Paulsen Complex.

VS. GICC
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead after a homerun by the lead-off batter.
Cozad picked up three straight outs to end the top of the first inning.
GICC went three up and three down in the bottom of the first. Isabella Hernandez was out on a dropped third strike, Makenna Broz popped out to first and Aubrey Hammerlun grounded out.
The Haymakers saw four batters in the top of the second with Sara Howell pitching back-to-back strikeouts. Howell gave up one hit before a ground out ended the top of the inning.
Howell swung a homerun to center field on a 3-2 count, tying the game 1-1.
Henessy Cargill lined out to second and Madilyn McNally grounded out.
Brooklyn Beavers homered on a 2-1 count, putting Cozad up 2-1.
The second inning closed after Mallory Munster grounded out.
The Crusaders tied the game at 2-2 after a homerun to left.
Howell picked up her third strikeout and Cozad’s defense claimed the other two outs.
Addison Howerter singled as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the third and Hernandez followed with a walk.
Broz flew into fielder’s choice, courtesy runner Ella Baal was out taking third.
Hammerlun struck out before Howell drew a walk. Howell got the bases loaded.
GICC closed the third after Cargill grounded out to the shortstop.
Cozad went three up and three down to keep the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Howell picked up two more strikeouts.
McNally struck out as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the fourth. Beavers lined to right, reaching on an error before taking second.
Munster lined into a double play to end the fourth.
The Crusaders scored three runs in the top of the fifth to lead 5-2.
Howerter kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a pop fly to the pitcher before Hernandez struck out.
Broz reached on an error on a pop fly. Hammerlun drew a walk.
Cozad was held from scoring after Howell flew to right.
Howell gave up back-to-back hits before Cozad cleaned up the top of the sixth with three straight outs. Howell earned her seventh strikeout.
Cargill and McNally struck out to the start the bottom of the sixth. Beavers hit a grounder and reached on a Crusader error.
The game ended with GICC winning 5-2 after Munster grounded out.
VS. YORK
York started with a three up and three down in the top of the first.
Cozad’s Hernandez struck out and Broz grounded out. Hammerlun singled on a fly, but was out advancing to second.
The Haymakers turned in a three up and three down with Hernandez pitching. She threw back-to-back strikeouts. McNally caught the third out in center.
Howell led off with a single on a fly to left before Beavers grounded out.
Cargill singled on a grounder to left, getting the bases loaded for the Haymakers.
York picked up back-to-back outs to end the half-inning.
After Cozad grabbed their first out, they gave up five straight hits and four runs.
Two pop flies for York closed the second inning.
Howerter, Hernandez and Hammerlun struck out in the top of the third. Broz got on with a ground ball and York error.
A York three-run homer put the Dukes up 8-0 in the bottom of the third.
Cozad struggled to contain the York offense, giving up two more runs.
York led 10-0 to close the third inning.
Howell was out as the lead-off batter in the top of the fourth with a ground out.
Beavers singled on a fly to left before Cargill struck out. McNally followed with a ground ball single. Munster drew a walk to get the bases loaded.
Beavers scored on a passed ball during Howerter’s at bat. McNally scored on the same pitching, pulling Cozad behind 10-2.

Saryah Carter drew a walk as the lead-off in the top of the fifth. Broz popped out to the York shortstop.
Hammerlun followed with a walk before Howell popped out in foul territory.

The game ended on a Cargill ground out, awarding York the 10-4 win.
VS. FAIRBURY
Howell started on the mound for Cozad in the final game against Fairbury.
Fairbury kicked off the first with a hit to center. Cozad claimed back-to-back outs before Howell gave up a hit by pitch.
A Cozad error followed by a single, put Fairbury up 1-0.
Howell earned her first strikeout to close the half-inning.
Broz hit a fly to right before Hammerlun and Howell drew walks.
Broz scored the tying run on a passed ball on the first pitch. Beavers followed with an RBI single to left, putting Hammerlun across home.
Fairbury cleaned up the first with back-to-back outs.
The Jeffs jumped out to a 4-2 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the second.
McNally grounded out to start the bottom of the inning and Munster followed with a dropped third strike. Howerter grounded out.
Cozad claimed their first out on a fly to McNally in center, but gave up back-to-back hits.
Howell pitched a strikeout for the Haymakers’ second out. Cozad gave up two runs, falling behind 6-2.
Hernandez replaced Howell on the mound before the Haymakers earned their third out. Hammerlun caught a pop fly at shortstop for the out.
