Union Pacific's famed Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, is journeying across the U.S. for the first time as part of the historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.
Big Boy will stop in Gothenburg on Thursday, May 28, arriving at 10:30 a.m. and departing at 11 a.m. at the Lake Avenue Crossing.
The next stop in Dawson County will be in Overton at noon with departure at 12:30 p.m. at the pedestrian overpass at Wayside park near C St. and U.S. Highway 30.
According to the Union Pacific's website, the tour includes a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia, major display events in eight cities and more than 50 whistle-stops in 10 states, including stops for the first time in Indiana, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania.

Phillips Canyon State Recreation Area open to the public

Phillips Canyon State Recreation Area is now open to the public providing expanded outdoor access and improved boating opportunities to the canal system below Johnson Lake State Recreation Area.
This newly designated SRA, located south of Lexington in Gosper County, boasts improvements such as a new concrete boat ramp, boat dock, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking and a new concrete vault toilet.
The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District primarily designed these additions, with input and support from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, to improve access and convenience for anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
The project at Phillips Canyon SRA was made possible by funding from the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District and the Motorboat Access Fund in partnership with Game and Parks, for the site's design and development.
Phillips Canyon SRA offers excellent access for fishing, paddling, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation. A valid Nebraska Vehicle Park Entry Permit is required.

Work will begin on I-80, Brady to Gothenburg

Weather permitting, work will begin May 18 on Interstate 80 between Brady and Gothenburg, from reference post 205.61 to reference post 213.25, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Paulsen Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repairs and asphalt paving.
Traffic will be maintained with temporary lane closures. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect.
Anticipated completion is October 2026.

Water safety grant applications to be accepted May 18
Press Release
Grant applications focusing on water safety, especially for children, will be received by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission from May 18 through June 18.
The Josh the Otter Water Safety Grant Program supports nonprofit organizations committed to educating children and communities about the importance of water safety.
Funding is intended to expand and enhance efforts that teach lifesaving skills and awareness, with a particular focus on preventing childhood drowning.
Grant recipients may use funds to develop or deliver educational programming, outreach initiatives, and resources that promote safe behaviors in and around water, such as life jacket loaner stations.
Through this program, Josh the Otter aims to equip children and families with the knowledge needed to stay safe in aquatic environments.
Grant winners will be notified in July.
