More than 730,000 acres burned across the Panhandle and west central Nebraska over the weekend, and firefighters from across a five-state region continued their daunting task Monday morning.
Some respite came Monday as winds that had gusted to 70 mph throughout the region Sunday calmed.
The Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team took over control of fighting all three fires — Morrill Fire, Cottonwood Fire and 203 Fire — on Saturday morning.
The Morrill Fire — believed to be one of the largest in Nebraska history — had burned 572,804 acres of Sandhills as of noon Monday. The fire has repeatedly threatened homes on the western edge of Lake McConaughy and threatened livestock operations throughout Garden, Keith and Arthur counties.
The federal government’s Inciweb website still listed the fire as 0% contained.
One woman died in her home Thursday in rural Arthur County, the Arthur County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release. Nebraska Public Media identified the woman as Rose Mary White in a Sunday story.
The Cottonwood Fire southeast of North Platte in Lincoln and Dawson counties had burned 122,144 acres as of noon on Monday and remained 0% contained.
Fire crews Friday saved a number of rural homes south of Maxwell, according to Sheriff Jerome Kramer, after winds had turned north and pushed the fire out of Snell Canyon into the river valley. The fire then jumped the canal along Fort McPherson Road.
Winds shifted early Saturday to aid in the fight to save those homes, but Jeffrey Lake south of Brady was evacuated for a third time in three days Saturday.
Crews also battled a third major fire in the Nebraska National Forest. The Road 203 Fire had burned 35,814 acres as of noon Monday.
A winter storm system late Saturday that was battering the Dakotas and Minnesota with snow, only brought more wind to the southern Sandhills Sunday in Nebraska.
Northerly winds Monday calmed to 8 mph as of noon. The high in North Platte was expected to be 40. However, winds are expected to pick up again Tuesday with little chance for precipitation and highs in the 70s across the region, the National Weather Service’s Lee Bird Office forecast said.

Jessica Kennedy
NORTH PLATTE — Weather permitting, work will continue March 23 on Interstate 80 from reference post 197.50 to reference post 205.62, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Western Engineering, of Harlan, Iowa, is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repair and asphalt resurfacing.
Traffic will be maintained with lane closures for the duration of the work. An 11-foot width restriction will be in place. Anticipated completion is spring of 2026.
The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.
Motorists should expect reduced speeds and lane reductions within the work zones and are reminded to drive cautiously through highway construction zones.

Margaret F. (Trail) Nielsen passed away March 7, 2026, at Bergan Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born January 2, 1932 at home to Doane and Frances Trail in rural Red Willow County, Nebraska. She attended McCook schools and McCook Junior College, and later attained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Chapman College in Orange, California.
Growing up in McCook, she was active in 4-H and earned numerous blue and purple ribbons at county fairs, a reflection of the dedication and pride she took in all she did. A gifted student, she was chosen to represent McCook at Nebraska Girls State. During her college years there, she was also nominated for Ivy Queen.

Her commitment to the military lifestyle was unwavering, and she ran a warm yet organized home wherever they were stationed.
In 1968, she was nominated as an Outstanding Young Woman of America. Following retirement, they settled in Lexington, Nebraska and later moved to Papillion, Nebraska in 2016. She was known for her many hobbies, her exceptional cooking, and her talents as a homemaker—her pies were especially beloved by family and friends. A skilled and generous crocheter, she lovingly created and donated more than 6,000 hats to charitable organizations around the world.
Throughout her life, she held several bookkeeping positions and also taught school in McCook and South Dakota. She remained active in her community as a member of Eastern Star, P.E.O., the Nebraska State Quilt Guild, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She devoted countless hours to volunteer work, her church, and the care of her farm, and she found special joy in teaching children how to crochet and knit after school.
