Lexington girls, boys basketball seasons end at subdistricts
LEXINGTON — The Lexington Minutemaid basketball team ended their season in the Class B-2 subdistrict quarterfinal after losing 34-33 to Nebraska City Monday in Lexington.
Lexington was led by Josslyn Mins with a game-high 13 points. Senior Maylin Novoa chipped in seven.
The Maids were the first to score after a basket by Ilhan Moulid.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-2 lead after a 3 by Lexi Brown.
Lexington spent some time at the free throw line, going 4 of 8.
Emmersyn Lawless' free throw tied the match at six.
The Maids took the lead 8-6 after a basket by Nyekuola Gai.
Down the back stretch of the first quarter, the teams traded baskets to end the quarter in a tie at 10.
Nebraska City kicked off the second quarter with a 7-0 run to pull away at 17-10.
Lexington used a timeout in hopes to slow the Pioneers pace.
Out of the timeout, Sydney Reutlinger-Maravilla scored a basket and Greta Rickertsen followed with her own to cut the deficit to three.
A Mins free throw followed by a basket pulled the Maids behind 19-17, ending the first half down two.
The third quarter started with a Mins basket, tying the match at 19 before the Pioneers used a 6-0 run to pull away 25-19.
Lexington cut the deficit back to four after a Mins basket.
Nebraska City went up 26-21 after a free throw by Hanna Marth.
Novoa's basket pulled Lexington within three before Marth was fouled on a attempted 3 before the buzzer.
The Pioneers ended the third with a 28-23 lead.
Lexington clawed their way back, using a 6-0 run to take a 29-28 lead.
A pair of free throws from Mins kept Lexington with the lead at 31-30.
Marth scored back-to-back baskets that put the Pioneers up 34-31 near the end of regulation.
Lexington pulled out all the stops to change the outcome, but the closest they got was 34-33 after a basket by Moulid.
Nebraska City fended off the final attempts of the Maid in the remaining seconds to win 34-33.
The Minutemaids ended their season with a 9-15 record.
