Overton boys fall to Elm Creek in subdistrict final
OVERTON — The Overton Eagles fell to Elm Creek 70-63 in the Class D1-9 subdistrict final Thursday in Overton.
Overton takes No. 7 seed, and will host No. 10 Fullerton in the Class D1-7 district final Saturday, Feb. 28.
Elm Creek took a 9-0 lead to start the final Thursday.
Overton cut the deficit to 13 after a 3 by Eli Luther.
The Eagles were down 18-7 at the end of the first quarter after a pair of McCarter free throws.
Luther kicked off the second quarter with a 3 to cut the deficit to eight before Elm Creek used a 5-0 run to pull away 23-10.
McCarter scored the next 10 points for Overton, but the Buffaloes kept scoring to stay ahead by nine.
A basket by Quinton Anderson cut the deficit to seven.
Overton finished off the first half with a 9-0 run to pull behind 36-33 after a McCarter 3.
Elm Creek used a 5-0 run to pull away 41-33 to start the third quarter.
The Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to pull behind 43-42.
A 3 by Dawsen McCarter gave the Eagles their first lead on the night at 45-44.
Overton's biggest lead came at 49-46 after a Luther basket.
Near the end of the third, Luther scored a basket to give the Eagles a two-point lead.
Elm Creek capped the third with a 3 to lead 52-51.
Both teams traded baskets in the beginning of the fourth quarter before a pair of Elm Creek free throws pulled the Buffaloes away by three.
Overton fell behind 62-55 after back-to-back Buffalo baskets.
A 3 by Brock McCarter cut the deficit to four, forcing Elm Creek to call a timeout.
The Eagles pulled behind 62-60 after Brock McCarter knocked down a pair of free throws.
Luther completed a 3-point play to give the Eagles a 63-62 lead before Elm Creek took over.
Elm Creek spent the rest of the night at the free throw line, going 6 for 8 to win 70-63.
Overton won the subdistrict semifinal Tuesday over the Wilcox-Hildreth.
Overton was led by Luther with a game-high 23 points. Brock McCarter chipped in 18.
A pair of free throws by Johnson puts the Falcons up 4-0 to start the night.
Overton finally got the gears turning, using a 22-0 run to lead 22-4. Luther and Jaisen Gonzalez had two 3s each and Brock McCarter went 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
Wilcox-Hildreth finished off the first quarter with back-to-back baskets, cutting the deficit to 14.
The Eagles opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to pull ahead 32-8.
Landon Lienemann scored his first of three 3s to stop the Eagles' run.
Down the stretch, the Falcons used a 5-2 run to pull within 21.
The first half ended with a 3 by Dawsen McCarter, putting the Eagles up 40-16.
Wilcox-Hildreth opened up the second half with a 5-0 run off a Lienemann 3.
Overton used a 6-2 run to pull away at 48-23.
Brock McCarter capped the third quarter with a basket that put Overton up 58-31.
The Falcons cut the deficit to 26 after a basket by Luke Lush.
Overton scored their final point after a free throw by Dawsen McCarter to lead 66-41.
Johnson scored three straight baskets during the Falcons' 8-0 run near the end of the game.
The final basket was scored by Thomas Donley, awarding Overton the 66-49 victory.
