Lexington soccer sweeps North Platte
LEXINGTON — The Lexington boys and girls soccer teams won their home matchups against North Platte Tuesday at Ray Ehlers Stadium.
The Minutemen defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 and the Minutemaids won the shutout 2-0.
MINUTEMEN
Lexington's Kendrick Marroquin took the ball up the left side of the field to the 15 yard line for a shot where a group of three North Platte players were attempting to clear the shot.
Tanner Horne went to clear the ball in front of the goal and teammate Evan McCuskey also went for the ball, Horne kicked the ball and it ricocheted off McCuskey and around keeper Seth Steele and into the left side of the net.
The Minutemen went up 1-0 in the fourth minute.
Lexington led 1-0 at intermission.
In the 53rd minute, Adan Lima-Miranda broke to the left side off a pass from Henry Perez.
Lima-Miranda put up a left-footed shot from 26 yards out that sailed to the top right of the goal and off the hands of Steele and into the net, putting Lexington up 2-0.
Three minutes later, Lexington was awarded a corner kick.
A short pass in, Miguel Tercero found Perez 14 yards out in the middle of the field.
Perez used a cross kick shot at the goal that slid past Steele and into the left side of the goal to give the Minutemen a 3-0 lead.
Lexington's defense held strong until the final three minutes.
North Platte's Elmer Guzman found himself open for a shot in the 77th minute.
Guzman took the shot from 24 yards out, the ball sailed over a couple Lexington defenders and over keeper Charley Ramirez.
The ball looked as if it was going to fly over the goal but instead, hit the upright bar and fell down into the net.
Lexington had a chance to go up 4-1 as Walter Barrios-Chavez took a shot in the 79th minute from 19 yards out.
The shot narrowly slid by the left side of the goal.
The Minutemen won 3-1.
Keeper Ramirez had three saves in the victory.
MINUTEMAIDS
The Maids' offense controlled the majority of the night.
Lexington had a couple shots on goal that wouldn't fall in the first half.
The score remained at zero at intermission.
Emmersyn Lawless drew away from a Bulldog defender for a cross shot from 17 yards out that sailed straight into the right side of the net in the 62nd minute.
Lawless had another big shot on goal 10 minutes later from 18 yards out that was saved from the Bulldog keeper.
Two minutes later, Lexington scored their second goal off a corner kick.
Caren Mejia-Garcia cleaned up a shot from Valerie Coherto inside 10 yards to put Lexington up 2-0 in the 74th minute.
Lexington looked to go up 3-0 in the 75th minute after Lawless made a shot 18 yards out but the keeper dove in for the save.
In the 78th minute, Karlianys Santiago tried for a goal from 16 yards out that flew a little too high and sailed over the top of the goal.
Lexington's final shot came in the 79th minute as Samantha Caballero tried for a goal from 21 yards out.
The Maids celebrated the 2-0 victory.
THURSDAYÂ
The Lexington boys soccer team defeated Kearney 3-1 in the first game of a tournament in Grand Island Thursday afternoon.
Kearney was the first to score with a goal in the 33rd minute off a penalty kick.
The Bearcats led 1-0 at intermission.
Lexington tied the match with a goal from Jose Navarrete in the 53rd minute.
It started with a free kick that landed in front of Navarrete whom drew the Kearney keeper out to score.
Four minutes later, Navarrete dribbled down the field and found Kendrick Marroquin wide open on the right side.
Marroquin took a few steps and fired a cross kick from 15 yards out to the left corner of the net for a Minuteman goal in the 57th minute.
Lexington went up 3-1 in the 68th minute after Alexander Barraza scored from 19 yards out off a free kick from the left side.
The Minutemen will play Saturday, April 4 in Grand Island. The opponent and time were not available at the time of publication.
