The Lexington Pride of the Minutemen received a Class 3A Division 1 superior rating Saturday at the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association state competition at Kearney High School.
Lexington's marching band is one of the largest bands across the state with 275 members.
The Pride of the Minutemen performed to "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" this season.
Prior to the state competition, Lexington competed at the 45th annual Lincoln Public Schools Marching Band Invite Oct. 17 at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.
The band received Division 1 superior, outstanding color guard and outstanding drumline.
Edgewater Insurance announced last week that longtime agent Mary Reed will retire Nov. 20.
Reed joined the company in 2012 following the death of her husband. A former preschool teacher, she had spent six years away from the classroom caring for him and knew she would need a job to support herself after his death.
Rather than return to teaching, Reed accepted a receptionist position at Edgewater Insurance. She later earned her insurance license and became an agent.
“Over the last decade and a half, her professionalism, deep industry knowledge, and unwavering dedication have helped shape the success of our Lexington location. Beyond her professional achievements, Mary’s warm personality, kindness, friendly voice and mentorship have made our office a better place to work for all of us,” Steve Gratopp, Edgewater Insurance community leader, said in a news release.
Reed said her work has allowed her to see people at their best and worst, helping clients navigate insurance claims after accidents and storms.
“Lexington has been lucky this year. We haven’t really had hail damage,” she said. “There was a season in 2014 where we had a lot of claims due to hail and wind.”
Reed said she wishes teenagers would take an interest in insurance or learn about it in school so they can better understand its importance and the factors that affect coverage.
“Please have insurance. Don’t drive without it. I know a lot of people don’t and they let it lapse, and they drive anyway. Insurance is important. I don’t want to see anyone have to give up everything because of one stupid mistake, like if they back into somebody and can’t afford to pay it so they end up in court,” Reed said.
A Lexington homeowner and active member of her church, Reed looks forward to volunteering, spending time with friends and visiting her grandchildren. Asked why she decided to retire at 69, she said it “just felt like the right time.”
“While we are incredibly sad to see her leave, we are thrilled for Mary as she embarks on this exciting next chapter of her life. She looks forward to spending more time with her family and friends, pursuing her hobbies, and enjoying a well-deserved break from the corporate world,” Gratopp said.
Edgewater Insurance will host a drop-in retirement open house for Reed on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The public is invited to stop by throughout the day for conversation, coffee and a cookie.
Reed said she looks forward to visiting with those who attend.
The Around Town section of the Clipper-Herald is to notify the public of upcoming events and to publicize pertinent information from individuals, groups or service organizations.

This last weekend, the 99th National FFA Convention and Expo was held in Indianapolis. Hundreds of students attended the event with Gothenburg’s own Carson Reiman bring home two titles.
Reiman is a student at Gothenburg High School who won national champion in prepared public speaking and won a national winner in vegetable production proficiency.
His proficiency award comes as a recognition for the work he has put into his business, Reiman Spuds, which he started as a freshman.
Reiman’s classmate, Mavrix Butterfield also scored a win as he earned a bronze award in extemporaneous speaking.
“The process is the point. All the work you do to get to the stage, all the experiences and memories made make it worth doing. This advice is worth sharing with any young adult learning how to work hard to accomplish a goal. We think these words couldn’t be more true but especially for Mavrix and Carson who represented our chapter at the 99th National FFA Convention. We are so proud of your accomplishments,” Gothenburg FFA said, in a post on their Facebook page.
