Overton's Brock McCarter earns 2 gold medals at Fort Kearny Conference Invite
OVERTON — Overton junior Brock McCarter earned two gold medals and one silver medal Friday at the Fort Kearny Conference track invite in Overton.
McCarter beat out Elm Creek rival Quin Oberg in high jump to earn his first gold of the day.
His winning jump of 6-5 ousted Oberg by two inches.
McCarter beat Oberg March 27 at the Wilcox-Hildreth Invite then again on March 31 at Adams Central.
Oberg got his first victory over McCarter at the Axtell Invite April 10 then won the Don Bader Invite April 24 in Lexington, with McCarter taking second.
"I've had high goals of jumping higher heights this year and I haven't been hitting them," McCarter said. "Then jumping 6-5 today and beating Quin means a lot."
McCarter was juggling long jump finals and high jump at the same time.
Following his high jump win, McCarter raced back over to the long jump bit.
He took second place to Elm Creek's Blake Erickson. McCarter had a personal best of 19-2.5 to claim the FKC runner-up title.
Erickson jumped 19-7.25 to take gold.
With a short breather, McCarter hit the runway in triple jump to battle against Oberg yet again.
McCarter's final jump in the second flight was a mark of 42-5 to take the leading spot.
Oberg followed up with a jump of 42-3.5 to put the pressure on McCarter.
McCarter fouled off all three finals jumps and Oberg came up short during his attempts.
McCarter was able to hold of Oberg by 1.5 inches to claim his second gold of the day.
"It was great. I'd say we (himself and Oberg) are the best in the conference in jumping events," McCarter said. "We go back and forth and it just depends on who's feeling it that day."
McCarter was also apart of the 4x100 relay team that finished in fourth with a time of 47.95.
