Livin’ Out Loud goes on despite storm damage
Gothenburg’s annual free Christian concert, Livin’ Out Loud, occurred Saturday, Aug. 15, with a worship service following on Sunday.
Despite a severe thunderstorm Friday night, causing damage to the main stage, the show still went on at Lake Helen. A smaller stage was brought in, and the speaker system was not as loud as past years.
The schedule for the day changed multiple times and All the Noise originally had to bail out of the event due to thunderstorm damage but was able to make a surprise appearance at the end of the event.

An information booth was held next to band merchandize at Livin’ Out Loud. The area stayed fairly busy throughout the event.
This year’s lineup included Logan and Katie, Megan Woods, Aaron Davis, Danny Gokey, Band Reeves, All the Noise and Keith. With a shortened schedule, the event that usually lasts well into the night ended early, shortly after 9 p.m.

Flock cameras, foreclosures and new bar topics of interest at Dawson County Commissioners meeting
In a world where we are seeing an uptick in anger over Flock cameras, Dawson County Commissioners had a question for Sheriff Mark Montgomery at the Aug. 14 meeting.
The board was curious if Montgomery had received any pushback from the public regarding the use of Flock cameras in Dawson County.
Montgomery said he was unaware of any but noted that the Flock cameras located in Lexington, Cozad and Gothenburg fall under city jurisdiction.
“They are a valuable tool, and we have solved a lot of crime with them,” Montgomery said. “But I do understand. They (people who are opposed to Flock cameras) feel that it is a little bit of an overreach and I respect that. It’s really no different than if I set a deputy on Highway 30 and had them write down every plate.”
Montgomery went on to say that Flock camera usage in Dawson County has helped track down suspects in murder cases and that he finds the cameras beneficial for police departments because they cut down on the time it takes to locate suspect vehicles.
The board thanked Montgomery for his input. Montgomery’s regular July crime report was provided in their packets and was not discussed at the meeting.
Dawson County Treasurer Kaitlyn Woltemath asked the board to approve a resolution to foreclose on two properties that were placed in a county tax sale in 2023. Now that three years have passed, the county is ready to foreclose on the properties and sell them for the amount of taxes due. The board approved with a 4-0 vote.
Amy Wenger with Cajotaha, LLC, asked the board to approve a KENO requisition for Wingding’s Bar and Grill. The new bar is going into the former location of Pete’s Lounge in Gothenburg at 518 Eighth St. Though it is not yet open for business, Wenger said she had received requests for KENO at the location.
Protocol usually requires bars to obtain their liquor licenses prior to gaining permission for KENO. Though Wingding’s Bar and Grill has not yet been granted a liquor license, Wenger said she has been informed that it will be approved and is only waiting for the formality of it being finalized at a Gothenburg City Council meeting.
With that in mind, the board granted the KENO request with a 4-0 vote, contingent upon the approval of the liquor license.
A public hearing was held regarding battery energy storage system regulations in the Dawson County Comprehensive Planning and Zoning regulations.
At a previous meeting, the board sent the changes back to the planning commissioners for approval. The planning commissioners approved the changes, and the board of commissioners then voted 4-0 to approve the regulations as well.
In other business:
- The board approved remitted country inventory provided by County Clerk Michaela Arndt.
- Approved the annual certification of program compliance showing that the county is complying with state regulations.
- Approved a conditional use permit filed by Carol Rowedder, to install solar panels on the roof of her house at Johnson Lake.
- Approved a conditional use permit filed by Adams Construction on behalf of Eagle Hills Ranch Inc., to allow for a mining and excavation operation.
The board entered into an executive session to discuss legal issues. No action was taken following the session.
Prior to the commissioners meeting, the Dawson County Board of Equalization held a brief meeting to approve the July 31 regular meeting minutes.

Drongesen raises awarness with first annual Cozad Lipedema Fun Run and Walk
Puberty can bring about an intense self-awareness for young women, and create a self-consciousness that can be hard to battle but for a young woman with undiagnosed lipedema, it can be even worse.
Sara Drongesen is raising awareness for the little-known disease through a Fun Run and Walk Saturday, Aug. 22 at Cozad Community Wellness Center.
Lipedema is a hereditary and hormonal disease that appears around puberty.
According to Drongesen, women with Lipedema can have a top size 12 and a bottom size 20. Because of fluid movement, a person with the disease could also start their day in a size 20 pair of pants but end the day in a size 24.
“It’s very painful,” Drongesen said. “If your butt looks like a shelf and you can put a cup of coffee or tee on it, then you know you have it.”
Lipedema is a chronic medical condition that causes a buildup of fluid and fat cells, specifically in the lower limbs. Symptoms can include disproportionate sizes in legs and arms, pain and tenderness, bruising and skin texture changes.
It is a genetic condition that is affected by hormonal changes that occur in puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
The World Health Organization formally recognized lipedema as a disease in 2019, and the United States is set to adopt a number for it in October of 2027.
Drongesen said that without the disease having a number, surgeries and treatment for it cannot be covered by insurance. She had to pay out of pocket for her own gastric bypass surgery to treat it.
Currently in the states, there are only 12 to 18 doctors that do lipedema surgeries and treatment.
“In 2019, I was in a wheelchair,” Drongesen said. “I couldn’t put a laptop on my thighs or hold my grandchildren without being in pain.”
Drongesen’s daughter is on a mission to participate in one charity marathon a month during 2026. She wanted to do one to raise awareness for lipedema, but there are very few runs supporting it and none near Nebraska.
She and her mother have teamed up to host the first annual Lipedema Fun Run and Walk in Cozad.
Having moved to Cozad from Las Vegas, Drongesen said that she knows not many people know who she is, and she hopes that this event not only introduces the community to her but helps her raise awareness for the disease she’s been living with her entire life.
The walk will be a one-mile, inside event with check-in at 9 a.m. The 5K run will be held outside the center with a check-in time at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $30 for the walk and $40 for the run. It includes a shirt and finisher medal. Extra shirts are available for $25.
All proceeds from the races will go to the Lipedema Simplified organization, which partners with medical personnel, patients and advocates to raise awareness for the disease. To donate to the program, you can text 53-555, LIPYRUN or MULTIGEN.
