GOTHENBURG — The Sun Theatre could be considered the heart of Gothenburg. With free summer movies for kids, affordable weekend movies, play performances and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the theater is well loved by its community.
On Saturday, the community came out to support the theater's continued impact with the annual Dancing with the Stars fundraiser in the performing arts center of Gothenburg High School.
Doors opened at 5:30 p.m. and dancers arrived at 6 p.m. The show itself started at 7 p.m.
The dancers were all smiles as they walked the red carpet, led by Kassandra Dinslage and Tony Collins. Dinslage volunteered to dance on behalf of Eastside Animal Center, where her partner Collins was recruited for the fundraiser by his wife.
"When I first moved here, my very favorite memory was the very first movie we ever went to," Dinslage said. "I learned that it was $3 for kids and $5 for adults. And then I learned it was all volunteer and I immediately was like, as soon as my kids are old enough, I will be a part of this. Period. And that's this year."
"Mine's the special events," Collins said. "So, when they brought the string violinist gals in — I think they were from Georgia or Texas — they were phenomenal."
Pulling on their memories of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Collins' and Dinslage's dance was a combination of millennial beats. They channeled their younger selves while dressed in velvet Juicy-style pants, bedazzled with DWTS.
This year's funds from Dancing with the Stars will be used to purchase an upgraded sound system for the Sun Theatre. The system would include boom and lapel microphones to allow every performer to be heard clearly in future productions.
"There are a lot of kids that really want to be on stage and to shine (in Gothenburg)," Dinslage said. "The Theatre creates more opportunities for music, for art, for dance, for theater, anything like that. It feels like sports are becoming more and more important, wherever you go, and arts are kind of getting the back seat or the side seat. So, it's really supporting the children who want to entertain, and entertaining is a very big part of a small community. I think entertaining the community you love and the people you care about is very important."
"Everybody's got to come from somewhere," Collins said. "When you watch the big screen, those people aren't all from big cities."
This year's dancers and their sponsors were:
While on stage, Spiegel —who said he'd developed a cough while fighting the recent wildfires — was ousted as having practiced his dance on the back of a fire truck between wildfire responses. Show hosts Scott Foster and Brady Harrison expressed gratitude to him and the other local firefighters for their hard work.
Overall winners for the night were Anna Dalrymple and Devin Brundage with their Macklemore-inspired dance featuring the song "Thrift Shop." They sported fur coats and large bling, and commanded the stage with confidence.
Judge Verlin Janssen said, "I'm exhausted," after watching their performance. He and the other judges, Gary Mroczek and Jena Rahjes, joked that they too would look good in the fur coats.
Other awards were:
Dance coaches were Ayden Wescoat, Taylor Wenger, Mashaela Macek, Jacque Sedlacek and Bailey Wellmann. They worked with the teams for over a month before the performance.
Dancing with the Stars also featured a performance by Vibes Dance Studio while votes were tallied.
The Sun Theatre is run completely by volunteers and sponsors who fund raise to upgrade equipment and keep the building running.
If you would like to get involved with the theater, you can call Executive Director Jessie Hruza at 402-413-5747.
