S-E-M girls come up short in D2 state quarterfinal against Red Cloud
LINCOLN — The S-E-M lady Mustangs season came to an end Wednesday after losing 62-53 to Red Cloud in the Class D-2 State Championship quarterfinal in Lincoln.
S-E-M was led by senior Taryn Arbuthnot with a game-high 19 points. Senior Jaycelyn Hoos chipped in 17 and freshman Kyler Jones added 11.
Red Cloud was led by Josie Faimon with 27.
The night started with a back-and-forth battle between the two teams until a 3 by Hoos put the Mustangs up 9-6.
Aiva Rust made a pair of free throws for Red Cloud to cut the deficit to one before a Hoos basket.
Jones' basket put the Mustangs up 13-11 near the end of the first.
The Mustang freshman had a chance to extend S-E-M's lead to four, but missed both free throws to set the first quarter score at 13-11.
After a quick tie at 13 off a Red Cloud basket, Hoos knocked down a 3 and Arbuthnot followed with a free throw to put S-E-M up 17-15.
The Mustangs went up 20-15 after an Arbuthnot 3, but Charlotte Rust answered with a 3 to cut the deficit to two.
Red Cloud followed with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 26-20.
S-E-M pulled back within one possession after a 3 by Arbuthnot.
Haize Heldt and Arbuthnot traded 3s and Hoos followed with a 3 for a short tie at 29.
Faimon scored back-to-back baskets, pulling the Warriors ahead at 33-29.
A pair of Jones free throws cut the deficit back to two, ending the first half with Red Cloud up 33-31.
The second half kicked off with a 7-0 run from the Mustangs as they pulled ahead 38-33 off a Jones basket.
S-E-M's Mia Scoville picked up her fourth foul after getting the hand of Faimon shooting a 3.
Faimon's two of three free throws pulled the game back into one possession.
Arbuthnot's free throw kept the Mustangs ahead 42-38 until Red Cloud used a 7-0 run from Aiva Rust near the end of the third.
Red Cloud had a 45-42 lead to start the fourth.
S-E-M cut the deficit to one after an Arbuthnot basket, but back-to-back 3s from Red Cloud put the Mustangs in a hole they couldn't recover from.
A Jones basket followed by an Avery Harder basket cut the deficit to five at 53-48.
Faimon knocked down a 3, extending the Warrior lead to eight before Arbuthnot found the hoop.
With time slipping away, the Mustangs started to foul.
The Mustangs found Hoos opened for a 3 to cut the deficit to six at 59-53 before Red Cloud spent the remaining time at the free throw line.
Red Cloud went 3 of 4 at the line to defeat the Mustangs 62-53.
S-E-M ended their season with a 13-10 record.
