LEXINGTON – The Minutemaids are back on the winning side of their season after a 3-1 win over Grand Island Northwest. After their win over the Vikings on Monday the Lexington girls team improved their season to 4-3, so far, their best season since 2015.
Sharing scores goals, and the Minutemaids shared the ball plenty in their game with the lady Vikings. Two of Lexington’s three goals were scored in an effective sequence on the pitch.
Lexington junior Samantha Morales’ sharp shooting scored the first goal for the ‘Maids sending a long ball over the hands of the Northwest keeper. The Minutemaids gained a second goal in the final seconds of the first half. Junior Daniela Lopez sent a ball in on a corner kick which was slowed by senior Jaqueline Solis and finished off by sophomore Janette Ortiz for Lexington’s second goal of the game.
Lexington’s third goal, scored in the second half, was made possible by good passing and a tiny bit of luck as Morales passed to sophomore Klair Fagot who crossed the ball to senior Kathy Flores. As Flores gained the ball, the Northwest keeper was tied up with two other players, giving her a wide open window for a shot on the goal.
The third goal put the Minutemaids up, 3-1, on the lady Vikings. The Minutemaids held the score for the rest of the game and added another win to their season.
Almost adding insult to Northwest’s loss, their lone goal was actually a Lexington own-goal scored in the first five minutes of play.
Guarding the Minutemaids’ net, in the game for the full 80 minutes, sophomore Alyssa Winter made 13 saves in Monday’s game with the lady Vikings and allowed just one goal in the match.
“Alyssa Winter, as the goalkeeper, continues to make great plays and our gritty defense was pushed today,” Lexington head coach Keith Allen wrote in an email to the Clipper-Herald about Monday’s game. “The Northwest speedy attack pushed three at them for most of the time. We continue to rotate lots of girls and are getting great hustle from everyone.”
The Minutemaids will rejoin the Minutemen as both teams will hit the road to Aurora. Games against the Huskies start at Aurora High School at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
