Minutemen take fifth at GI Invite; Minutemaids take third

GRAND ISLAND – The Lexington Track and Field teams had a chance to test their metal against a tougher crowd on Thursday. The Minutemen and the Minutemaids participated at the Grand Island Track and Field Invite where they muscled for points among a long list of schools, many of which were class A.

The Lexington boys’ performances earned fifth place at the meet with a combined total of 75 points while the girls in orange and black took their efforts to third place, overall, with 89 points.

The Minutemaids earned five of Lexington’s seven gold medals at the Grand Island event on Thursday, all held by the ‘Golden Maddies’ with Madison Smith holding first place in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash and the long jump. Smith ran her 100 meter in 12.45 seconds, the 200 meter in 25.95 and launched 18’04.25 inches in the long jump, 11 full inches farther than the second place winner from Millard West.

Maddi Sutton took home two gold medals with her 38’01.75” shot put entry and blew away all of her competition in the Discus, registering a 140’03” throw, over 25 feet farther than Millard West’s second place winner.

Back on the first place podium for the Minutemen again, Ajack Waikur took first place in the High Jump at the Grand Island Invite. Waikur took the gold after clearing 6’02.00”, two inches higher than the second place winner from Norfolk.

Tim Nyinguan grabbed the Lexington boys’ second gold medal of the day with a 47’06.50” triple jump, eight inches further than Waikur, who took second place with a 46’10.50” flight.

Most of the schools at Thursday’s event were Class A schools, and Lexington head coach Sam Jilka felt that with that, the Minutemen and ‘Maids’ performances were pretty remarkable.

“Tough competition,” Jilka wrote in an e-mail to the Clipper-Herald after the meet. “Mainly Class A schools brought out some tremendous marks by both the Minutemaids and Minutemen at Grand Island.”
