LEXINGTON — Despite sitting several of their starters, the Lexington Minutemen put a heap of hurt on the competition this weekend, while also making their season home debut at the Optimist Sports Complex. The boys in orange hosted an evening game with Gering on Friday that started slow but spooled up like a turbo-charger into the second half for a 7-0 win. The Minutemen took to the pitch early against the York Dukes the following morning and made another statement against the Central Ten foe by shutting down the game nearly eight minutes early, 11-1.

Lexington played against the wind in the first half of their game with the Gering Bulldogs but managed to score two goals, scored by Lupe Cruz and Junior Casillas, while holding the Gering offense at bay. With the wind at their back in the second half they sent five more into the net, scoring three goals on the clearly frustrated bulldogs in the final 10 minutes of the game.

“I thought we settled in on the second half,” said Lexington head coach Jess McHargue after the game on Friday. “We looked a little sloppy at times but were also resting… everyone. We had our top group out and pulled up four JV guys. It was fun to watch them step up and fill the shoes they had to fill.”

Lexington’s match on Saturday with the normally formidable York Dukes gave fans a reason to scratch their heads as the Minutemen destroyed the Central Conference opponent. The Minutemen put up 6 goals and allowed the ball to sneak into their own goal once in the first 40 minutes of the fray before pounding five more into the goal on an already defeated York team. The game clock was stopped with one last goal scored by Bryan Aldana from a corner kick, ending the game with nearly eight minutes left on the clock.

“Like last night, we had a lot of extra guys in,” McHargue said after Saturday’s game. “Everything went right and we played really well. It was just a good team win, today.”
