KEARNEY — When the sun set one week ago and leaders of Kearney’s nonprofit World Theatre scanned the parking area at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, they saw what they were hoping and praying to see: A sellout crowd.
KEARNEY — “We know it’s been a different year for our high school seniors,” said Steve Barth, a volunteer at The World Theatre. “We thought this might be a nice opportunity to allow them to come together in a socially distanced and safe fashion by enjoying a movie and celebrating with all of their friends.”
KEARNEY — Businessman John Gerber has sold so many things — from skateboards and sailboats to safaris and sympathy cards — and it all started when he was 7 or 8 years old, folding popcorn boxes for his dad in the Gerber Sweets Shop on the south side of The World Theatre lobby.
KEARNEY — Since its inception, Kearney’s World Theatre has been a place where cinematic classics run comfortably alongside the art nouveau, documentaries and concert films. From time to time the stage comes alive with bands of every genre or live theatrical performances.
I moved back to Kearney in 2007 just after I finished grad school in Montana. This was just before The World Twin closed its doors. I was sad to see it go and heard about a letter-writing campaign to share memories of The World.
The World Theatre is a special part of our community in so many ways. As a volunteer, I have collected many favorite moments during the past six years from the unique vantage point behind the concession counter.
When Katie and I decided to leave our city life behind to raise our family in my hometown of Kearney, we did so with hesitation. We knew this was where we needed to be to give our children the advantages that I had enjoyed: great schools, nearby family, safe streets and a healthy dose of the good-life work ethic.
