Officer Death

GOTHENBURG — A Gothenburg couple, Jill McCandless, 53 and her husband, Jeff McCandless were found deceased in their home on Saturday, June 8 as the result of, “an apparent murder suicide,” according to Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman.

Around 9 p.m. officers with the Nebraska State Patrol were dispatched to the McCandless home after a relative had discovered the scene, said Waterman.

Jill McCandless was employed as a police officer with the Gothenburg Police Department, a position she had held since 2010, being the third woman officer in the department’s history.

Waterman said autopsies have been scheduled and the investigation by the State Patrol is ongoing. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and Gothenburg Police Department assisted at the scene.
