Veterans Papillon’s seating was almost full Monday for the Memorial Day service hosted by American Legion Post 111 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5136.
With the help of Lexington High School’s National Honor Society, the American Legion and VFW lead an emotional service dedicated to remembering the fallen.
American Legion Commander Tyler Eltiste and VFW Commander Matt Marshall gave moving speeches that had the crowd letting out little gasps and nods of agreement.
Eltiste told the story of a fallen brother, who he called Jeff, who gave his life trying to safe others from an IED field.
The solider accidently triggered an IED while retrieving a casualty of another, right after telling the medic who accompanied him, “We’re going to get our brothers out of here."
The story of Jeff brought to life the reality of war, sharing some of its gruesome details with civilians. Jeff, sadly, wasn’t the last casualty that day and it took four UID teams to clear the IEDs.
Marshall’s speech focused on how soldiers die twice, “once when they died and a second time when people stop saying their names."
He encouraged those in attendance of the Memorial Day service to think about whose names they carry and to talk about their fallen family members and friends so they would not experience “the second death.”
Two NHS high school students also spoke; Felciana Deleon and Emerson Lorenzo.
Deleon spoke about the anniversaries of World War II and the Vietnam War.
Come October it will be the 81st anniversary of World War II. As of March 29, it has been 53 years since the Vietnam War.
She stressed the importance of remembering both events.
Lorenzo began his speech with humor, pretending he was a salesman promoting a Memorial Day sale and then went on to tell the crowd that even though parades, picnics, and prices feel important the truly important thing on Memorial Day was remembering those who died to provide us with the freedoms we have in American.
NHS members made up the color guard, sang the National Anthem and played the bugle during a salute to the fallen.
As shots rang out in the air, the crowd stood in silence, remembering those who died for our country.
“Find the Fun in Fitness” at Lexington’s Orthman Community YMCA this summer with Fit Kids Camp.
Health and Wellness Director Terri Burch is encouraging parents to separate their kids from their screens and enroll them in activities focused on healthy living and exercise.
Burch’s Fit Kids Camp is one such activity, held on Wednesdays, June 3-17, at the YMCA in Lexington.
The idea for Fit Kids Camp came when Burch noticed that fewer kids have been playing in the street and outside in general. She wanted to craft a program that would get kids up and moving, off the couch.
“I don’t think they (kids) get the activity that they need,” Burch said. “The days of driving around the neighborhood and there’s a random baseball game somewhere, or kids playing outside, playing a soccer game even in the street …you just don’t see kids outside playing. A lot of kids are on a device, sedentary, and that’s not a good thing. Kids gotta move.”
In April, the YMCA held Kids Super Circuit, organized by Burch, and it “went over well."
After searching for a program that local kids would latch onto and enjoy, she had finally found it, but she wanted to change the name. Thus, Fit Kids Camp came about.
“It’s sort of a name change,” Burch said. “We’ll probably do a lot of circuits.”
Circuits consist of different activity stations that kids work their way through.
Burch has them stop every few minutes and walk a lap.
She said the kids who participated in April’s Kids Super Circuit loved it and even formed little friend groups, so she’s hoping to continue providing that experience for them with the Fit Kids Camp.
It’s been a long process for Burch to find a program that sticks.
She started with Kids Boot Camp after a couple of kids showed interest in an adult boot camp program at the YMCA, but she received “crickets” in response.
Planning a kids' boot camp was challenging too, as activities like battle ropes are harder for kids to do.
She moved on to Kids Yoga. Sadly, Kids Yoga also received no interest.
Kids Super Circuit, however, took off and filled a gap that Burch noticed.
She said younger children — kindergarten through fifth grade — have fewer sports activities to participate in, and unless they are in tennis or soccer lessons, they don’t have much for the summer.
She wanted Kids Super Circuit — now Fit Kids Camp — to target that age group and provide a way for them to stay active.
Kindergarten through fifth graders can meet at the YMCA on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:15 p.m. June 3-17.
“We kind of timed it so whoever’s going to summer school can be here right afterwards,” Burch said.
Registration for Kids Fit Camp is due by June 1. It is $15 for YMCA members and $25 for nonmembers.
Parents are not required to be present during the program, but need to be there to pick up their children at the end.
Parents can register their kids at ymcaoftheprairie.org/lexington, visit the Orthman Community YMCA, or email Burch at tburch@orthmanymca.org. They can also call the YMCA at 308-324-1970.
The Around Town section of the Clipper-Herald is to notify the public of upcoming events and to publicize pertinent information from individuals, groups or service organizations.
