COZAD - Christopher Estrada, 16, of Lexington, is dead after drowning near a bridge that crosses over the canal on County Road 418 and rural Cozad.
According to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, Estrada jumped from the Tri-County Canal bridge, had begun swimming, then submerged under the water and never resurfaced.
At approximately 4:16 p.m., the Dawson County Sheriff's Office was notified of a possible drowning and a dive team was also requested on scene.
Estrada's body was located at 9:18 p.m. on May 25, approximately 360 feet east of the canal bridge in ten feet of water.
Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene.
Estrada was a student at Lexington High School and was a member of the Junior Varsity soccer team.
Assisting in the search was the Cozad Police Department, Cozad Fire and Rescue Department, Lexington Fire and Rescue Department and Dive Team, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Allmand Brothers of Holdrege, Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District and Victor Diaz.
